New regulations: mandatory emergency lane for ambulances in the Canary Islands from 1 October

Stricter traffic regulations come into force on the Canary Islands on 1 October. These include a mandatory central lane for emergency vehicles. New rules apply to cyclists and scooter users.

The Cabildo de Canarias introduces changes to the general traffic law. The Guardia Civil and local police will enforce these rules. The aim is to improve safety and traffic flow across the archipelago.

Drivers must create a central lane during traffic jams. This is known as the 'Verahund'. It is reserved for ambulances, firefighters, and other emergency vehicles. This measure becomes a legal obligation on 1 October.

Drivers must react immediately to audible signals. They must slow down and move to the left or right. This clears the centre of the road.

Scooter users and cyclists face new rules. People under 15 cannot ride scooters. Parents face a fine of 100 euros. Riders aged 15 and over must wear a certified helmet. Riding on pavements is strictly prohibited.
