Gran Canaria: Taxis with panic button linked to police
The Cabildo on Gran Canaria is implementing a system that allows taxi drivers to connect immediately with local police in case of threat. The system broadcasts live audio and video from inside the vehicle.

The new safety system was developed after a coordination meeting with cooperative taxi companies and law enforcement services. Drivers can activate an emergency button. Police officers receive immediate access to the audio and video feed from the taxi interior. This allows for rapid assessment of the situation and real-time response.
The project supplements existing infrastructure. 1 160 taxis are currently equipped with dashcams. Recordings are stored on memory cards. The cards are sealed and available to police and courts for investigations. There are approximately two requests per day. The new panic button allows intervention during an incident. It does not rely only on post-event analysis.
For taxi drivers, this provides an additional communication channel with police during crises. For passengers, it increases safety. Services can react immediately with insight into the vehicle interior. The Cabildo is preparing a financial program worth nearly 500 000 euros. This funding will equip fleets with further safety equipment.
