Partially destroyed human remains found on Garachico coast

Archaeologists recovered partially destroyed human remains on the coast in Garachico, near Barranco Hondo beach, due to coastal erosion.

An archaeological intervention took place in the area near Barranco Hondo beach in Garachico on the north coast of Tenerife. The remains were partially exposed by coastal erosion. They were recovered urgently to clarify the circumstances and context of their placement in this location.

Nuria Álvarez from the General Directorate of Culture and Cultural Heritage of the Canary Islands Government stated that various hypotheses are currently being considered. Initially, it was assumed these could be remains of a repressed person from the Civil War period. However, as excavation work proceeds, new theories are emerging. These include the possibility that they are victims of the plague or victims of floods that affected Garachico at various historical moments.

It is not yet known what this means for the general public. The work aims to establish the nature and chronology of the remains. It also seeks information about the circumstances of their placement. Laboratory analysis results will be key to establishing scientific aspects and assessing the possible historical context.
