Housing decree takes effect on 1.10.2026; actions in Las Palmas and Mogán

The Spanish government introduces a decree banning evictions until 2030. It enters into force on 1 October 2026. Councils in Las Palmas and Mogán demand immediate solutions to the housing crisis.

Decree (Real Decreto-ley 26/2026) regulates the social function of housing. It imposes a total ban on evictions until 2030. It limits rent increases upon contract renewal. It prohibits speculative property purchases by "vulture funds". It regulates short-term rentals and rooms.

The decree affects approximately 95,000 small landlords in the Canaries. A landlord who does not renew the contract after 5 years must notify the tenant 6 months in advance. They must pay compensation equal to at least 12 months' rent for a similar property.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the "Derecho al Techo" meeting began a protest action on Plaza de La Feria. In La Palma, the Cabildo demands solutions to the housing crisis. In Mogán, the council demands government assistance to purchase 211 legally protected apartments.
